I also think this matter will be settled outside of court, if Bleach's creator even bothers with it

He probably doesn't even have to do/say anything; his publisher(s?) will take care of things on their own.

I hate stuff like this, it's why I'm so opposed to bootlegging (and why the Con has policies againt bootlegging for vendors AND plagirism for Artist Alley)- it seriously sucks to tread upon another artists rights.

It's also worth pointing out that this controversy set out a discussion on a large number of issues, including the relating of it to how scanlations infringe on creators rights.
http://mangawidget.wordpress.com/2010/0 ... t-simmons/ This articel relates the problems with entitlement that make people think tracing/plagirising and bootlegging are okay things to do. What people do is their own business, but it's all good stuff to take in, and take into consideration.
http://manga.about.com/b/2010/02/26/nic ... rverse.htm Deb Aoki started the tangent on bootlegging, and this post covers a lot of what's been discussed.

Here's another round up.

Simmons did release an official statement that is both insulting and avoids admitting any wrongdoing, but Radcial has take the book off the market, so they're doing the right thing either way.

Oh, I remember that statement, basically saying it was 'homage' and whatnot.

Some people *shakes head*

The publisher of Simmon's comic did do the right thing and took the book off the market though, so now it's just mostly fandom rage against Simmons. I imagine it's had a negative affect on him getting more work with many respectable publishers. There's no short supply of people who want to draw comics, or celebrities willing to tag their name onto a comic [Courtney Love] or who actually want to make comics themselves [Rashida Jones of Parks and Recreation has a series from Oni Press coming up, Frenemy of the State]

Does anyone else have the feeling that once the case is over, everyone but the fans of the stolen material will just forget about this? While Simmons made a point when he said that he brought similarities as rememberance to the mangas he loves (and stole), he's still stealing... I just do not like him anymore, he should just confess straight-through, before he loses the respect of any possible fan or publisher he may still have left or can win back.

Nah, generally in the comics industry you don't get work or good PR from press for a good while when this happens. I imagine only desperate companies will give him a try, or just limit him to writing. I think he actually had his "assistants" do a lot of the art [not an uncommon thing in manga, and something Pat Lee was infamous for in US comics], so it's possible he was unaware, but still, bad taste all around, so it'll be a good while before he gets work again [A much improved Roger Cruz came back recently, after getting into trouble for that stuff in the mid 90's]

And yeah, stealing from artists really sucks, which is why I'm always harsh about scanlations and stuff like that :) So keep that in mind when I get crabby about that stuff folks ^_^ Not mad at you, just the practice/culture involved in it. Simmons is just another form of the entitlement crud, thinking he can get away with it because to him, it's just an "I'm a fan too!" thing.

And now back to posting stuff that isn't crabby. Seriously, I think Animinitime Halifax is going to be awesome stuff folks.

Mind you, sometimes the occasional righteous anger is a good thing. I know I'm crabby about that stuff, but I have good reasons to be, and it never hurts to inform ^_^ Plus, my pro-industry, pro-creator rights personality comes in handy for getting support :) Keeping the con and our forums professional looking and free of that stuff is an important thing.

Anyhoo, tangent aside, have you preregistered? I'm assuming you have. Hope everyone who has can make it.

I pre-registered for both cons, expecting to make it to both. However, I am a little nervous that my chances of making it to Halifax aren't perfect..
